Kelly cousins fuel season opening win for Calvert Hall

Calvert Hall sophmore Stephen Kelly won 13-of-15 faceoffs and recorded three goals and an assist to help lead the visiting Cardinals to an 8-3 season-opening victory over St. Stephen/St. Agnes, Saturday morning in Alexandria, Va.
Junior attackman Patrick Kelly had two goals and an assist, while sophmore Johnny Kelly, junior Ryan Brown and senior Matt Diehl each scored a goal for Calvert Hall. Brown also added an assist. This offensive work cam despite an excellent performance from SS/SA sophmore goalie Sam Beazell, who recorded 19 saves to keep The Saints within striking distance most of the game.
All three Kelly cousins collaborated to jump start the Calvert Hall offense, each with scoring on unassisted dodge shots.
The first goal of the game was was netted by Johnny Kelly. Stephen Kelly followed with his first score, and Cardinals stretched their first quarter advantage to 3-0 as Patrick Kelly tallied.
SS/SA would score again on a strong dodge and shot from middie Isaiah Davis-Allen, to keep the game within in four, before Patrick Kelly found a cutting Ryan Brown for a score that would again expand the Cardinals lead. Calvert Hall's final goal came on an extra-man feed from Ryan Brown to Matt Diehl. SS/SA scored a late fourth quarter goal and the game finished with the Cardinals moving to 1-0 on the season with the 8-3 victory.

Calvert Hall got an excellent defensive effort from junior goalie Jack Brust (9 saves) and close defensemen seniorCarmen French. In addition junior defenseman Evan Connell, who came up with several impressive groundballs and clears, sophmore defensemen Garrett Epple, and sophmore defensive middies Tyler Mayes and Tom Hollenback, all had a solid games.
